John 13 : 14-16
English Standard Version (ESV)
14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16

Wednesday night in the Vine  we discussed the fact that God comforts us.  That is a great thought, that our God would take the time and count us valuable enough to comfort us, to make us feel good.  But here’s the deal, he doesn’t comfort us just so we can sit around and feel good about what is going on in our lives, he expects us to go out and do the same thing for others.  He expects us to get out and serve.Jesus set the example for our service.  In John 13 Jesus washes his disciple’s feet, which on the surface seems like a very odd thing for Jesus to do.  In fact it made Peter really uncomfortable.  You see, during that time it was normal for a homeowner to have a servant on hand to wash his guests feet during a gathering or party.  So for Jesus to do this, the lowliest of jobs, was lowering himself down to the level of a servant or slave.  And what was his response the disciples?  He basically says that I am doing this as an example to you, now get out there and serve.

When we serve others we have the chance to meet their needs and show them that we care.  It makes them feel good and tells them that they are important in someone’s eyes.  For some, it may just help them get through another day.  But more importantly we are demonstrating the love of Christ to them.  For many, it may be the only exposure to Jesus that they ever have.

We may not be comfortable with the places that serving takes us, or with the people it puts us in contact with but if the son of God can lower himself to the position of foot washer, what excuse do we have for not following his example?

Additional Verse:
Mark 10:45
English Standard Version (ESV)
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Response:
How Can I be a better servent for Christ?
What are ways that I can serve in my school, at home, at my job, in my community?
What things are holding me back from serving?
